    Hey Defenders,

    Glad you’re still broadcasting.

So I’m listening through episode 6, having not heard episode 5, due to not having watch Avatar yet (I’m trying!

I won’t discuss much about Avatar here, except to say that I am myself guilty of having said (admittedly off my own bat) that what I knew of the plot sounded very like Dances with Wolves and that this impression had made me a premature sceptic of the film. This happens with films sometimes and is why I HATE knowing pretty much anything about a film before seeing it. Spoilers make me hate life.

ANYWAY, not having seen (and trying to withhold judgement on) Avatar, I will not comment further.

    Shit. Wait. One more thing.

You say that a point which detracted from the film was the absence of even so much as a throw-away line to explain the importance of the mineral Unobtainium, and go on to say that Sunshine would have been affected significantly without Cillian Murphy’s voice-over introduction.

I’m not sure I agree with you that this would have changed the impact of the film all that much, but I’ll watch it again with this in mind and get back to you.

Incidentally, how bothered were you by the fact that in Sunshine there seemed to be gravity on the Icarus II? Perhaps you were content that this was explainable by the vessel’s acceleration toward the sun?

The way I see it is that there are certain aspects to the plot that directors/writers have to either show or tell; the intro explaining that the sun was dying was probably necessary, in that it was vital to the plot, but just as Mark said, the astronauts wouldn’t have discussed something which was known to them all anyway, so the choice was made.

In any case, films explaining too much because the director didn’t trust the audience to work stuff out on their own, have annoyed me a lot more than those which suggest the details of a back-story without explicitly explaining them.

When I do go and see the film I am well-over-half expecting to find some of the things I’ve heard you criticise about the film not quite so bad, or in fact just right. But the rest of me has the sneaking suspicion that the aim was to create a huge, not-to-be-forgotten cinematic experience which will smash box-office records and just look awesome, leading to failings in attention to traditional detail.

We’ll see. I’ll go watch the film and report back. I still love you guys.

In any case I’m really really looking forward to it. It’s been the one of the most interesting films I haven’t seen yet.

    Adieu, Defenders

Further to what I said earlier, I think that the fact that they are willing to mount an interstellar offensive for the stuff makes its importance pretty clear, and in naming it unobtainium they really couldn’t allude more clearly to something akin to exotic matter, the future discovery of which is widely accepted to be a key to ending humanity’s energy crisis, enabling interstellar travel etc.

Also, you really do sound angry. You do know he has a pitchfork, yes?

I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I just have to say this: that was, indeed, the cutest duck on the internet. Let’s just all accept it.

Some may disagree, but your vote has been counted.

Do you know, this will be the first time I’ve actually used the site comments to reply to someone. I just never thought to do it before.

Thank you for coming along and listening to our humble show 🙂 as I said on your own site, you represent the first (potentially) active listener we’ve got outside our own friend group.

I would like to give you founder status as a result. We shall do a shout out to you next episode and direct people to your Blog.

So welcome fellow Mirthling, and founding international listener!

  • L. Dahl

You sure know how to make a girl feel special, huh? *giggles*
I don’t know how much help I’d bring on the “international area” since most series, movies and reality shows I watch are in English, so I’m pretty much used to different accents and slangs… Sorry, I always ramble a bit, my point was: I understood you guys perfectly.
